Atheists at the Pub

Published at 09:00 on 09/03/2010

The sun is out, and Hilary Term is nearing its end - as is the Atheist Society's second Committee. Come to the pub with us on Thursday and drink to the continued success of our Society! Or, just drink. As ever, atheist chatter until late will be provided gratis.

We're meeting at the Turl Bar at 9pm. That's the Turl bar, not the Turf for a change. It's on Turl Street, on the left as you walk away from the High Street. There's a Facebook event at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=350923930137.

7th week will be the OxAth AGM and Elections. Members are all welcome to turn up, get nominated for committee positions, vote, and generally participate in democratic fun times.

Exceptionally, you *cannot* buy your membership at this event. The AGM will be at 8pm in Wadham College's Old Seminar Room. A member of the committee will be at the lodge shortly before the event.

Dr Johannes Zachhuber

Published at 13:40 on 15/02/2010

Our speaker this week will be Dr Johannes Zachhuber, Fellow and Tutor in Theology at Trinity College. Dr Zachhuber will be speaking to us on the currently controversial topic of secularisation theories. Do rising standards of living promote a secular life and worldview? Will the decline of religious belief which has been so marked in 20th century western Europe be paralleled globally in the 21st century? Will it be paralleled anywhere, ever?

The talk will be in the Jean Robinson Room at 20:00 at Keble College. A member of the committee will be at the lodge shortly before the start to direct people to the event. The event will be free to members of the Oxford Atheist Society; entry is £2 for non-members, although you are welcome to join at the event (£10 life/£5 year). There is a Facebook event at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=306045957260.

God and Morality

Published at 08:50 on 10/02/2010

*Wadham JCR has been confirmed as this week's venue!*

On Thursday 11th the Atheist Society will welcome Professor Richard Swinburne to speak on "God and Morality". What difference does the supposition that there is a God make to morality? Widely lauded Christian apologist and Oxford philosopher of religion Prof. Swinburne will be speaking to us about the differences he feels there are between religious and non-religious morality. We expect the talk will be at 8pm at Wadham College.

A member of the committee will be at the lodge shortly before the start to direct people to the event. The event will be free to members of the Oxford Atheist Society; entry is £2 for non-members, although you are welcome to join at the event (£10 life/£5 year). What is Science, Really?

Published at 08:08 on 01/02/2010

This week the Oxford Atheist Society will host a talk by Dr Joseph Trakalo on the subject of "What Is Science, Really?" at 8pm on Thursday 4th February at Keble College. For atheists and secularists trying to understand this world by rational means, this is a crucial question.

Dr Joseph Trakalo is a researcher in geonomics at the Wellcome Trust Centre in Oxford, as well as an active atheist and humanist. There will be an opportunity for a couple of Society members to have dinner with the speaker before the talk - email me for details.<\p>

A member of the committee will be at the lodge shortly before the start to direct people to the event. The event will be free to members of the Oxford Secular Society or Atheist Society; entry is £2 for non-members, although you are welcome to join at the event. There is a Facebook event at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=292246119617.<\p>
